Metrostar sails out of crude trade with double Suezmax sale

Greek shipowner Metrostar Management has sold its final two suezmax tankers to compatriot Delta Tankers, marking its full exit from the crude carrier business.

Brokers said the Theodore Angelopoulos-led outfit has offloaded the 2021-built, 156,800 dwt Crude Levante and Crude Zephyrus, both constructed at New Times Shipbuilding in China, for about $78m each, or $156m in total.

The two Tier III, BWTS-fitted tankers are due for special survey in mid-2026. Market players noted that the achieved prices are well above the original newbuilding levels of around $56m–57m for similar units ordered in China in 2018–19, reflecting continued strength in the suezmax market.

The deal closes Metrostar’s chapter in the crude tanker trade, leaving the company focused solely on its product tanker fleet, which includes LR1s and LR2s. The company has been gradually reducing its exposure to the crude sector over the past years, having sold several aframax and suezmax units amid strong secondhand prices.

For Delta Tankers, led by Diamantis Diamantidis, the acquisition expands an already significant suezmax fleet. Delta’s portfolio now includes around 30 tankers, mostly suezmaxes, along with several VLCCs and one aframax.

Chủ tàu Hy Lạp Metrostar Management đã bán hai tàu chở dầu Suezmax cuối cùng của mình cho công ty đồng hương Delta Tankers, đánh dấu việc rút lui hoàn toàn khỏi lĩnh vực vận tải dầu thô.

Theo các nguồn tin môi giới, công ty do Theodore Angelopoulos lãnh đạo đã bán hai tàu Crude Levante và Crude Zephyrus, đều được đóng năm 2021 tại xưởng New Times Shipbuilding (Trung Quốc), với giá khoảng 78 triệu USD mỗi tàu, tổng cộng 156 triệu USD.

Hai tàu này đều đạt tiêu chuẩn Tier III, được lắp đặt hệ thống xử lý nước dằn (BWTS), và dự kiến kiểm tra định kỳ đặc biệt (special survey) vào giữa năm 2026. Giới phân tích thị trường nhận định, mức giá giao dịch này cao hơn đáng kể so với giá đóng mới ban đầu (khoảng 56–57 triệu USD/chiếc đối với các tàu tương tự được đặt đóng tại Trung Quốc giai đoạn 2018–2019), cho thấy sức mạnh bền vững của thị trường tàu Suezmax hiện nay.

Thương vụ này khép lại hoạt động của Metrostar trong lĩnh vực tàu chở dầu thô, để công ty tập trung hoàn toàn vào đội tàu chở sản phẩm hóa dầu (product tankers), bao gồm các tàu LR1 và LR2.

Trong vài năm gần đây, Metrostar đã dần thu hẹp sự hiện diện trong mảng dầu thô, bán đi nhiều tàu Aframax và Suezmax trong bối cảnh thị trường mua bán tàu cũ sôi động.

Đối với Delta Tankers, công ty do Diamantis Diamantidis điều hành, thương vụ này giúp mở rộng thêm đội tàu Suezmax vốn đã rất lớn. Hiện Delta đang sở hữu khoảng 30 tàu, chủ yếu là Suezmax, cùng với một số VLCC và một tàu Aframax.
