The retailer developed Proxima to simulate how decisions play out, helping identify potential problems ahead of time.

Target developed a technology tool that aims to help the retailer make better inventory decisions across its supply chain.

The tool, called Proxima, is a digital twin of Target’s middle-mile inventory positioning system which determines how goods move between facilities to stores, per an Aug. 13 news release. In practice, Proxima uses the same data and logic as its inventory platform to simulate how decisions play out before inventory teams put them into practice.

“If a digital twin emulation through Proxima surfaces a potential problem, teams can correct the issue or take another path,” Target said in the release. “If an approach works, they can move forward with greater confidence.”

Besides improving product availability, Proxima’s feedback will help reduce possible supply chain disruptions and handle complex processes with better certainty.

For instance, Target’s fresh food offerings require strategic inventory planning due to product expiration dates and lead times, per the release. During a small-scale Proxima pilot of 63 food items, a Target team was able to simulate inventory flow changes and correct issues prior to launch. In turn, the efforts helped improve the on-shelf availability of the fresh food products by 2.5%.

Proxima also played a part in the launch of Target’s Houston Receive Center. The 1.2 million-square-foot facility — the first of its kind for Target — provides more inventory holding capacity and flexibility, serving six of the retailer’s regional distribution centers and a flow center.

Prior to the site opening, Proxima was used to simulate how inventory would move in and out of the facility with about 98% accuracy, Target reported. In turn, Target teams were able to lessen inventory flow issues after the receive center opened.

Stronger inventory management has been one of Target’s ongoing priorities. The retailer has been especially focused on exploring enhanced demand forecasting, artificial intelligence and machine learning to improve overall inventory forecasting, positioning and decision making.

Looking ahead, Target aims to scale Proxima across more network functions.

“Over time, the insights Proxima generates could also inform future AI-powered, agentic decision-support capabilities, helping our teams evaluate options, prioritize actions and automate operational responses,” Target said.

Target đã phát triển một công cụ công nghệ nhằm hỗ trợ nhà bán lẻ đưa ra các quyết định quản lý hàng tồn kho hiệu quả hơn trên toàn bộ chuỗi cung ứng.

Công cụ này có tên Proxima, là một Digital Twin (bản sao số) của hệ thống định vị hàng tồn kho trong khâu middle-mile của Target. Hệ thống này xác định cách hàng hóa được luân chuyển giữa các cơ sở phân phối và các cửa hàng, theo thông cáo báo chí ngày 13/8.

Trên thực tế, Proxima sử dụng cùng dữ liệu và logic xử lý với nền tảng quản lý hàng tồn kho của Target để mô phỏng trước cách các quyết định sẽ diễn ra trong thực tế, trước khi đội ngũ quản lý hàng tồn kho chính thức triển khai.

Target cho biết trong thông cáo:

Chẳng hạn, các sản phẩm thực phẩm tươi sống của Target đòi hỏi việc lập kế hoạch tồn kho có tính toán kỹ lưỡng do đặc thù về hạn sử dụng và lead time (thời gian cung ứng).

Trong một chương trình thử nghiệm quy mô nhỏ của Proxima với 63 mặt hàng thực phẩm, đội ngũ Target đã có thể mô phỏng những thay đổi trong luồng hàng tồn kho và khắc phục các vấn đề trước khi chính thức triển khai. Nhờ đó, tỷ lệ sẵn có trên kệ (on-shelf availability) của các sản phẩm thực phẩm tươi sống đã được cải thiện 2,5%.

Proxima hỗ trợ Target vận hành Trung tâm tiếp nhận hàng Houston

Proxima cũng đóng một vai trò trong quá trình đưa Houston Receive Center của Target vào hoạt động.

Cơ sở có diện tích 1,2 triệu feet vuông (khoảng 111.500 m²) là trung tâm đầu tiên thuộc mô hình này của Target, cung cấp thêm năng lực lưu trữ hàng tồn kho và khả năng vận hành linh hoạt hơn. Cơ sở này phục vụ 6 trung tâm phân phối khu vực (Regional Distribution Centers) và 1 Flow Center của Target.
